USAID, U.S. Embassy Organize Partner Fair in Madagascar

ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar—In May, the U.S. Embassy and the USAID Mission Director in Madagascar organized a partner fair to showcase USAID-funded development work.

The Global Collaboration on Sorghum and Millet’s national partner, FOFIFA, and Madagascar National Sorghum Team members represented the Climate Adapted Cropping Systems & Value Chains Development for Sorghum, Pearl Millet & Groundnut project during the high-profile event.

Information was shared about the first round of field tests for 15 open-pollinated varieties of sorghum and 15 varieties of groundnuts at 12 sites located throughout Madagascar.

The field tests identified 3-4 initial varieties for official seed registration, and irrigated off-season sorghum seed multiplication was initiated to support seed packets for smallholder farmers and seed system distribution.

“The overall goal is to accelerate in-country utilization of improved climate-adapted varieties of sorghum, pearl millet and groundnut for nutritional and financial benefits and integrate key actors along the value chain to build long-term markets for these crops,” said Nat Bascom, director of engagement and leadership for GCSM.

Leveraging global and Pan-African collaborations, the project seeks to expand technology options and expertise in Madagascar and develop small- and large-scale markets. By strategically enhancing the production of sorghum, pearl millet and groundnut via better varieties, improved production practices and increased extension, the project will strengthen national coordination, expertise and private/public platforms.

The Climate Adapted Cropping Systems & Value Chains Development for Sorghum, Pearl Millet & Groundnut project is a partnership between GCSM and the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Peanut at the University of Georgia. This two-year project is funded through a USAID grant.
